UL of Lafayette's name

Published/Last Modified on Thursday, February 4, 2010 2:06 PM CST

In a recent front page article, one of your writers referred to University of Louisiana at Lafayette as “ULL”. Please note that “ULL” is an improper naming convention for the university. I am a proud alumnus of UL Lafayette under the previous name, USL, and I would like to ask you, and all of the writing staff of The Daily Iberian, to observe the proper naming convention for the university.

For your reference, I am providing the URL below for the official UL Lafayette website describing the proper use of the university’s name.

The following statements can be found on the webpage.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette is the formal and official name of the university. Please use this name in all first references.

UL Lafayette is acceptable for second reference.

The following uses are inaccurate: ULL, U of L, U of LL, and U of L at Lafayette

The lead athletic name is Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns®. Teams may also be referred to as Louisiana-Lafayette, Ragin’ Cajuns® and Cajuns. Ragin’ Cajuns ® is a federally registered trademark.

Thanking you in advance for your support of our university.
