Red ribbon response

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 2:10 PM CDT

The Louisiana State Police visited Center Street Elementary School Tuesday in force in recognition of Red Ribbon Week 2009.

In addition to talking to the students about the importance of remaining drug free, troopers provided information on proper automobile safety by demonstrating how to wear seat restraints when riding in a car or truck. The law enforcement officers demonstrated how easily occupants can be thrown from a vehicle when not wearing seat belts with a rolling truck cab exhibit that simulated forces that occur during roadway collisions.

Troopers from the State Police motorcycle patrol unit gave students an exhibition of their riding skills using an obstacle course set up earlier in the day.

Accompanied by Trooper Romey, a narcotic detection canine, students were shown how hidden drugs are detected with a classroom demonstration.

Red Ribbon Week is being observed across Iberia Parish. The Iberia Parish School Board is supporting this year’s annual week of anti-drug and alcohol awareness by sponsoring a variety of events each day in schools throughout the parish.

Schools independently scheduled events throughout the week, with some students arriving for class wearing silly socks, hats, sports jerseys and so on. The community observation of Red Ribbon Week began Sunday with local religious organizations asked to offer prayers and to address the problems of alcohol and drugs in their sermons.

Today is Wear Red Day, with the scarlet clothing intended to show each wearer’s support for a drug-free lifestyle. Students will pledge to not use drugs on Thursday, and the week’s events end Friday with Light the Way Day, with community residents asked to turn on their porch lights as a show of support.
