Catholic High, Loreauville, Jeanerette roll on; Jackets upset

Catholic High blasted West St. Mary 70-0 Friday, Jeanerette held off Sacred Heart 16-8 in Ville Platte to remain unbeaten in district, and Loreauville claimed a 21-13 win over Port Barre to stay in its district title chase, but New Iberia suffered its second straight loss, a 10-7 defeat by Carencro that knocks the Yellow Jackets to 1-2 in district after opening the season with a 6-0 record.

Elsewhere, Delcambre beat Vermilion Catholic 7-3 in Abbeville and Hanson earned its first win of the season, beating Ascension Episcopal 40-13. In other Teche Area high school football games Friday, St. Martinville lost to Denham Springs 35-7, Franklin lost to Patterson 48-6 and Erath lost to Kaplan 40-3.

On Thursday, Westgate lost to St. Thomas More 23-6, and Highland Baptist lost to Acadiana Home School 43-0.

Catholic High 70, West St. Mary 0

Taylor Bullock tied his own school record with six touchdown passes, Cory Brodie had four touchdown receptions and Catholic High set a school record for most points in a game as the Panthers blew past West St. Mary in a District 6-3A contest.

Bullock completed 19 of 28 passes for 259 yards and had touchdown passes of one, 10, 20 and 11 yard to Brodie, 24 yards to Devin Boutte and 12 yards to Thomas Theriot as the Panthers scored 35 points in the first quarter and led 56-0 at halftime.

Brady Rogers ran for two touchdowns and Jared Bullock and D’Shawn Etienne each had a touchdown run as CHS improved to 5-3 overall, 2-1 in district, one game behind district leader E.D. White.

West St. Mary (0-7, 0-3) had a grand total of 67 yards offense in the game.

The records are not complete by it is believed that the 70 points is the most ever scored in a game by Catholic High, breaking the mark of 66 points against Cecilia in the early 1970s.

Bullock’s six touchdown passes tied the record he set against Jeanerette in the first week of the season. Kicker Grant Quinland also set a record with 10 extra points in the contest.

Catholic High plays host to Berwick Friday, WSM plays host to Patterson Friday.

Carencro 10, New Iberia 7

Two turnovers proved costly, leading to a field goal and a touchdown for the Bears, who entered the game with a 1-5 record after an open date.

New Iberia scored on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Jordy Joseph to Jalen Jones in the second quarter, accounting for one of New Iberia's two first-half first downs. Joseph completed 17 of 33 pass attempts for 174 yards, including six to Jones for 99 yards.

Carencro got 135 yards from running back Alex Johnson, but Damian Rubin scored the Bears' winning touchdown on a four-yard carry with 6:16 remaining in the game.

New Iberia had two more possessions, but could not convert a fourth-and-inches on its first drive and came up short on a 40-yard field goal with 12 seconds to go on the second.

Loreauville 21, Port Barre 13

At Loreauville High, B.J. Green rushed for 153 yards and scored three first-half touchdowns to power the Tigers past Port Barre.

Fellow running back Nick Julien gained 93 yards, also running the wildcat offense in the second half for Loreauville, which limited Port Barre to 172 rushing yards.

Delcambre 7, Vermilion Catholic 3

At Abbeville, Erik LeBlanc's 24-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Josh Ruiz in the second quarter was the difference maker for Delcambre in its District 7-A win over Vermilion Catholic.

VC scored on a 30-yard Garth Mitchell field goal with 5:13 to go in the first quarter but got no other points.

Ruiz's TD pass to LeBlanc with three seconds remaining in the second period and the point-after kick by Dylan Stelly made it 7-3, and neither team scored after that.

Jorey Renard led DHS (5-3, 2-1) with 72 yards on 15 carries. The TD pass was Ruiz's only throw of the game. Dylan Bourque went 4-for-8 for 35 yards.

Tyler Vincent had 63 yards on the ground for VC (3-5, 1-2).

Hanson 40, Ascension Episcopal 13

Each team scored 13 points in the first quarter, but Hanson outscored the Blue Gators 27-0 the rest of the way to earn its first win of the season.

Charles Uze scored two touchdowns, Zachary Stewart added a TD run and Drake Rodriguez had a touchdown run and a 13-yard TD pass to Brandon LeBlanc for the Tigers (1-7, 1-2).

Ascension Episcopal fell to 2-5 and 0-3.
