Obama's political pandering is costly

While I certainly respect those trying to get by on Social Security, President Obama’s proposal to send every Social Security recipient a $250 check to compensate for the lack of a cost-of-living adjustment for this year can’t be considered anything but political pandering.

We just read about the record-setting deficit the federal government is reporting. We know we’re facing huge deficits in coming years, having to borrow more and more money to sustain already approved federal spending, and how all that borrowing is devaluing the worth of the dollar.

We don’t have the money President Obama proposes to send to Social Security recipients.

And while I know many seniors could use the extra $250, there’s no basis for sending it, other than the chance for the president and others to crow about how they have compassion for seniors and did something to help them — though they’ll skip over how they did it using someone else’s money.

The issue has arisen because this January, for the first time since 1975, Social Security benefits are not rising due to a cost-of-living adjustment.

The same basis for measuring the cost of living that saw benefits go up 6 percent last year says there is no inflation this year so no cost-of-living adjustment is warranted.

The 6 percent increase recipients got last year is probably a bigger percentage raise than that received by most area people still working. And understandably, the bigger increase last year isn’t lessening a desire for another adjustment this year.

Predictably those who favor the $250 bonus for Social Security recipients suggest this would stimulate the economy. But simply looking at this as an issue of fairness, why is spending by those on Social Security any more stimulating to the economy than spending by anyone else?

The feds could send $250 to poor people and stimulate the economy, or to veterans, or the teachers, or most any other group and get the same economic benefit — though the benefit is in question when doing so will cause an already soaring deficit to soar even higher, and at a time when we’re reading how the recession is already starting to end.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for Social Security recipients getting more money, but there are already questions about how the government is going to afford to pay basic benefits a few years from now, much less afford one-time bonuses that aren’t part of the standard program.

The federal budget is already way out of balance. We’ve got to demand reductions in federal spending, and no more political grandstanding by the president and members of Congress, even when it benefits a deserving group like our nation’s seniors.

Where in the h### do you think the federal government gets the money for roads, bridges, etc?
It is stupid people that make statements like you did! That is why we are stuck with this Idiot In Chief! "

" What powers do the president possess and why do you only NOW want to limit them? Is it because of WHO the president is? Why did you not have this concern about the 43 before him?
I have lived long enough to know why the USA President faces so much resistance in this part of the country; I have lived here all my life.
While the country was going to ruin under the last administration, no one said a word; in fact, if you dared to criticize you were called "unpatriotic". "

" The blame does not lie solely on this president or the previous president. The house & senate, our US congress and their laws that line their pockets & give themselves power and security are the ones who have screwed this country. You want to make a change --- it needs to start with our lawmakers and also fixing exactly how much power the president should be allowed. "

" Glad it is your opinion that the government get out of YOUR life. I appreciate that our government gives us education, roads and bridges, police and fire protection, members of the armed services, etc. Even though I work and earn a living, I know there are some common occurrences (hurricanes, i.e.)that I cannot handle. Thank goodness I live in a country where my government looks out for its citizens to the best of their ability.
As to your comment about President Obama, I have heard these so many times; I, therefore know what you are really complaining about! "

" When President Bush gave a tax DECREASE to the wealthiest of Americans when he first got into office, what do you call that? I don't recall your criticism thenand they certainly deserved it less than the sr. citizens whose working lives are behind them.
I work and know how hard it is to make ends meet, so can imagine how difficult it is for our sr. citizens on a fixed income. What happened to the concern for grandma? The concern that the healthcare reform was going to kill her? If she starves to death, isn't that the same? "

" How sad, the Publisher "piles on" to the continuous criticism of President Obama. It's easy to see why so many awful names the President is called appear on this forum. The simple reason the $250 is offered could be that the President is trying to soften the blow of NOT GETTING AN INCREASE for senior citizens, yet the cost of medicare premiums will go up as will everything else needed for everyday living, like food, utilities, taxes, etc. When one seeks to find an ulterior motive in what others do, that says a lot about that person's motive! Looks like you have mistaken Obama as your MESSIAH!
How about everyone paying their own bills and government getting out of our lives!
Self Reliance is the answer not government handouts! "

" Seems to me there are those out there who would critize the Creator himself/herself if elected President of the USA. Afterall we already critize/blame him/her for the state of our lives. I feel for the first time since President Kennedy we have a President who might be able to lift us out of the muck & mire in which we now find ourselves. Voice your concerns, but unless you have something better to offer, keep quiet, and voicing concerns is not the same as complaining about every effort the sitting President is making. "

" Get it together people. When the previous administration was robbing people no one said anything. He did not ask for the money. He just took it from in front of your face. Bush did not care about the american people at all, and the eight years he was GIVEN the seat of President we took the knocks and did not say nothing. All I am saying is, give Obama a chance! It took Bush eight years to screw it up it will take some time to fix it! "

The sorry thing is, there are people who fall for it! "
