Sci-fi shot at the Dock

Lights, camera, action was last call at Dock of the Bay nightclub in New Iberia Thursday night as a film crew shot scenes there for a movie called “Monster Wolf” until 5 a.m.

The crew of 50, most donning white rubber boots commonly referred to as “Delcambre Reeboks,” or as crew members called them “mukluks,” to combat the rain, arrived in town late in the afternoon quickly filling the parking lot with trailers for the cast and filming equipment.

Daniel Lewis, the movie’s executive producer, said the project is a Lafayette-based Bullet Films production, that will be a sci-fi movie already set for wide television and international distribution.

He said Bullet Films shot five movies around Acadiana last year, and “Monster Wolf” will be the first of another five they have planned for the area.

The premise of “Monster Wolf,” he said, is the wolf as the reincarnation of an American Indian spirit that comes to life upset by oil drilling efforts on native land. The wolf attacks everyone involved in the drilling project, Lewis said and much of the movie centers around stopping the wolf from killing everyone.

The film crew and cast were in town for only 12 hours, Lewis said, with all scenes shot at the Dock of the Bay.

The bar’s owner Bonnie Broussard said location scouts contacted her about a month ago and expressed an interest in shooting scenes here.

“They passed in front, we remodeled and stuff, did a bunch of airbrushing on the outside when we took over and they wanted to see the inside and were really impressed,” she said. “They have been coming in and checking things out since then, seeing where they would shoot different scenes and stuff.”

Lewis said the production company shoots footage for its films all over Acadiana from Crowley and Breaux Bridge to Lafayette and New Iberia.

“We love to cover all of Acadiana,” he said. “This place (Dock of the Bay) was the perfect spot for these scenes.”

The movie features actors Jason London of “Dazed and Confused,” Griff Furst, Robert Picardo of “Star Trek” and Leonor Varela who was featured in “Blade II,” Lewis said.

“There is a lot more substance in this movie than other sci-fi movies,” Lewis said.

Lewis also said most of the cast and crew is in town from Los Angeles, but with a growing film industry in Louisiana, many are considering making their stay in the area more permanent.

“The Acadiana region is the third-most active area for the film industry only behind California and New York,” Lewis said. “That’s really incredible and with it comes a lot of job opportunities for people in this area. The really cool thing about film is that it requires every trade from set medics to electricians, financial advisors and writers.”

Though much of the crew on “Monster Wolf” is not from the area, Lewis said it is the goal of Bullet Productions to have visiting experts share their knowledge and trade with locals in the hopes that they would be utilized on future projects.

“Its really great and it’s a neat thing to see,” Broussard said as she watched the filming in the bar. “I think it’s fantastic that there is interest in shooting movies in the area. It does a lot for New Iberia. Puts us on the map.”
