CHS Homecoming Dance vs. ACT

j6Considering the decline in ACT scores at CHS do you think the administration considered moving the homecoming dance to saturday night instead of friday after the game.  Students will be forced to choose between staying out late after a Homecoming game and attending the dance or going home and get a good nights sleep and rest up for the ACT test they will be taking on Saturday morning.  I understand that it is the responsibility of students and parents alike to make good choices and sound decisions but, why should they have to even make this choice.  All in all,the students may think, "If I don't do well on this test I can just take it again."  Not bad logic in my book.  However, these scores will be recorded and further bring down the average reported by CHS.  It is these type of decisions by the CHS administration that is bringing the unwanted attention to its lack of leadership.  Are dances on Saturday night really that bad?  Why not move the dance so that "everyone" can enjoy it?  Sure the test can be take again but the memoried of a High School Homecoming dance are limited.  Its the little things that the administration can do, but refuses too, that can make a difference in attitude and moral.  If anyone in the "clique" can make a difference I beg you to do so for the sake of the kids.  DR UHL MOVE THE DANCE TO SATURDAY NIGHT--RESTORE THE TRADITION AND CREATE MEMORIES--MEMORIES LAST A LIFETIME

" I am sure your little darling angel has never done anything illegal. Never speeding or passing stop signs or red lights. You are probably oblivious to what your little "darling" is up too anyway. probably the drunkest one at the "after party" Its parents like you who don't even kknow their children and what they are doing. And if you have "heard" about the party why don't you go to it and see what is happening instead of just throwing stones from your glass house. It would just be easier to change the dance so-EVERYONE-could-enjoy-it! "

" There are deadlines for applications for scholarships. Yes there are other ACT dates, but the deadlines for students to turn in ACT scores are approaching. It is too late now to change the dance, but it is the idea that the administration could of avoided this in September when he was asked by the parents to move it to Saturday night. This is an example of how he refuses to listen and take any other advice. This is not being an effective leader. "

" The people complaining are the ones who will be found "drinking" after the homecoming dance. That is what this is all about -- not about the students doing well. I have heard that there was an "after party" after the homecoming dance. So, if you want to go and get drunk (which is illegal) at the after party, then take the ACT another time. Leave administration out of this! "

Put the Students First wrote on Oct 22, 2009 4:07 PM:

" To all posters who claim that students should be responsible, remember they are students, not adults yet. I would also dare to suggest the school's leaders, who are adults, should do everything to promote academic success. Scheduling a dance before the ACT forces students to choose between being 1) fun-loving students who get to enjoy a dance and 2) academically-minded students who are preparing for the future. This decision forces the students to diminish one choice, if not both. Put your egos aside, put the students first, and move the dance. Everyone wins, and shouldn't that be important? "

" Some traditions are indeed worth keeping. CHS has had a Saturday Homecoming Dance for thirty plus years, including the one I went to. It was only last year that the principal changed it. Now we're lucky enough to have the ACT fall just before it as well. The only tradition the principal seems to embrace is the declining ACT scores. "

" This is exactly what is wrong with our society. Who is forcing these students to take the ACT on this day? It is offered numerous times during the year and it is your choice when to take it and how many times. It is sad when people look for things to complain about. This is the very reason that CHS is getting such a bad rap. Focus on the real issues and leave the petty ones alone. This is a parenting problem not one for the school or the petty trouble makers. "

" It is simply absurd that they would have a dance the night before an ACT test. This would never happen in other school systems, because they are concerned about the academic well being of their students. "

" Well, of course, some students will do well and others won't. That's true on any given day of any test administration. But I believe the school should do everything in its power to assure academic success. Is the school trying to sabotage those students who choose to be what they are--high school teenagers--instead of college students, which they ARE NOT? And yes, there are multiple ACT test dates--as long as you continue to "pay up." Hmmm...as long as I'm paying for ACT testing, I'm not contributing those dollars to CHS..... "

" What other excuses will parents come up with? The ACT could fall the day after several events, including the Sugarcane Festival, 4th of July, Birthdays, Graduations, etc. Are you really going to make excuses for your child for the rest of their life? If they are old enough to take the ACT test, they are old enough to make responsible decisions regarding going home and resting for the test. And if they are unable to make those kinds of decisions, looks like they aren't ready for college after all, whatever their test-score. "

    " To CHS Grad:

I completely agree with you. Both the ACT and the SAT were the morning after school functions and I know plenty of people including myself that performed well on the tests. The dances do not last all night and while I understand wanting to make memories, students need to think stay out late and possibly do horrible or go home a little earlier and prepare for my future. "

FYI wrote on Oct 20, 2009 1:29 PM:

" This situation was brought to the attention of the administration in September. It is absurbed to have a dance the night before ACT and congratulations to the student that scored high the night after a dance, but the majority that is not the case. The administration needs to be concerned about the student's academic performance. "

" The seniors parents contacted the principal and the activities director. We received an email the next day saying that they would not change the dance. This is how it is once a decision has been made they do not want any imput from the parents. But until the chancellor will step in and say enough it will continue and the students will suffer. "

Tired of Bad Excuses wrote on Oct 20, 2009 1:03 PM:

" The ACT website shows 6 dates through out the year. Also, I believe you can take it numerous times. Therefore, the students have several times to take the test. The fact that one test a year is the day after homecoming is a horrible excuse for the lower scores. When I was in school, CHS was the only school to have their homecoming dance on a Saturday. I enjoyed getting pumped up from a BIG WIN on homecoming and then dancing the night away on the SAME night. Good luck to all area football teams! "

" I took the ACT the day after my junior PROM - scored high, got into LSU, graduated and became a productive member of society. The ACT has been the morning after school functions years before Uhl ever showed up, and I didn't lose any "tradition" or "memories" - I had to act like an adult and be responsible the night before my test. Sounds like it could be a positive lesson learned. "
