DWI's

Does anyone remember about 20 years ago when the bars around town used to stay open all night? The drunks would sometime pass out at the table, sleep it off, and wake sometime later and drive home. Now with mandatory bar closings; all at the same time of night, we hear and see of all of these DWI fatalities that now seem to plague us. Bet if you trended the increase of accidents associated with DWI over the years you’d see that the trend increased concurrently with the mandatory bar closings. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you put all the drunks on the highways at the same time, you increase the risk factor of those who are sober. If society is really serious about drinking and driving, then let’s close all the bars for good. Or let’s just station DWI checkpoints one block away from the bars and arrest all those who leave. Sooner or later everyone would quit frequenting bars.  Why is it okay to make checkpoints miles away from the point of the problem? This just gives the drunks more space to potentially kill someone before the checkpoint. We’ll never get the public to support these actions because of all the revenue and jobs that bars generate. If you take away this revenue and jobs, someone else will have to pay. We have responsible adults out there that can moderate their drinking and safely drive, let’s just not put all the drunks on the road at the same time.

    " All,

More accidents occur every day due to Careless driving and speeding than Drunk Driving. Should there be jail time imposed due to careless driving as it is for DWI. The government tells us that people die as a result of DWI. When will they put out the real stats on motor vehicle crashes and the root cause of these accidents. I think everyone would be very surprised to see how many accidents are caused by stupid drivers compaired to Drunk ones. "

" My last job was in law enforcement. Trust me, 99% of the dwi's we wrote in iberia parish were thrown out. I also have friends who have received dwi's and they had them fixed also. There is a problem here. "

" Why not make it easier for victims of drunk drivers to sue the bars who let these irresponsible drunks leave their premises intoxicated. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out when someone's had too much to drink...especially if you're the one serving them. I know...we can't make bartenders baby sitters and no bar owner is going to turn down a buck...however...ANYONE could be killed by a drunk driver...maybe that bartender should consider it could be their loved one day...how guilty would they feel then? The law cares less about the victims and more about the bars. "

" Drinking and driving is a serious problem. With all the bars closing at the same time, thereby putting all the drunks on the road at the same time, the odds are increased of a drunk driver crashing into ANOTHER drunk driver. If a drunk driver crashes into another drunk driver is it a crime or a public service? "

" Twenty years ago there was still a mandatory bar closing time in Iberia Parish, they never stayed open all night as you say. DWI related deaths have nothing to do with closing time but with those stupid people who chose to drive drunk and will continue to do so. It is part of our culture, the part of tourism we don'i show. Lets change before someone else dies. "
