Third World City

Amazed

Having spent time in the Philippine Islands, I can truthfully say that the streets of New Iberia resemble nothing more than a third world country's city streets.  There is no rhyme or reason to the actions of the drivers.  There is nothing coming close to courtesy or order or law. 

Of course, when those charged with enforcing law and order are driving with no regard for the law, then what else can be expected?  IPSO does not use their turn signals.  They don't obey traffic laws, so why should anyone else?

" I never see them writing tickets, anywhere" was an observation, I used to see a lot more vehicles pulled over being ticketed when the PD was still active. You're trying to make it a political issue. My Point? I pay taxes and insurance out the yazoo because of all the crazy and un/underinsured drivers, more patrols ( no matter WHAT department/agency they are from ) would take those with no insurance and no respect for the laws off the road. We just need more patrols. Makes sense???! "

    Just goes to show you how blind some of you are when you don't want to see it. The Sheriff's department has been fully staffed for nearly a year. Did you know that IPSO has a traffic division and thats all they do. How Stupid to say something without all the facts. They do write tickets they do make arrests and they do make an effort. "

    Reading some of these posts I am convienced that the guys are really trying to get to these calls ASAP. In my opinion, if they didn't care and was scared to arrive with the criminal still on the scene, why would they be driving so fast to get there. This shows that they are determined to get to the call ASAP, just as they are supposed to. Need a ride along program for some of you to see for yourself. "

Speeding has gotten twenty times worse the last few years. Come to think of it, I don't see IPSD pulling people over within city limits nor outside, I only see State Troopers on the highway writing tickets!! We pay taxes that pays their salaries, I would like to see them live up to their end of the bargain and keep our streets safe. We need more patrols! "

    " By no means would I say that there is no politics involved in a Sheriffs department. By saying that I would be living in a different world. What I am saying is that ( in general ) if there is no politics involved the enforcement is different. A city Police officer and a Sheriffs deputy are two totaly different people. I think Louis has rubbed a few the wrong way by not allowing politics be his main concern. I think Louis could care less if he is re elected. He's gonna make a difference in the first 4 years. "

    " I couldn't agree more! Although I haven't been to third world countries to compare the New Iberia traffic with, I can only concur that the lack of traffic-observing and patroling police is disturbing. At any given day you can do 5 miles over the speed limit on any road in that town and be passed EVERYONE else on this same stretch of road at 10-15 miles faster than you are. Maybe if the traffic was being monitored, the expensive tickets for going 15 and 20 miles over the speed limit would hopefully fix the problem!!! "

    " The reason things are the way they are is because you have a Sheriff's department with Political issues to think about policing the streets. When you had a Police department with no political issues to hold the traffic officers back and tickets were issued frequently things were not so bad. If one has nothing to fear he will do as he pleases. When the laws are enforced freely, without fear of politics, things are handled differently. Travel alittle more and you might see that N.I. is not much different than any other city it's size. "
