Ackal Bails Out of Jail Contract.....

Sheriff Louis Ackal informed  Iberia Parish Councilmen he is out of tending the Parish Jail as of 31 July 2009.  What now. The Council can either give the Sheriff 500  thousand or more  dollars a year to keep it like it is  ,with  about 500 people in a prison built for 260 or they can get a private company to run that jail.  If the Council chooses to go with a private Company to run it, they need to go back to the original purpose for these small parish jails. These jails were to house local inmates with only a year or so to serve.  They were never designed to keep inmates with 20 or  30  years of prison time.  By going back to the original idea of the local jails the Parish can reduce the population to 260 in the jail.  Fewer  inmates will cost less.  Plus we will not have our local people  who are going to jail for simple breaking and  entering  or bar room fights  being stuck in jail with Bank Robbers, Rapists  and Killers just so the jail can make money from DOC or the Federal Prison System to house these felons with long jail sentences. I pray that the Council makes the right decision. Keep our jail for only short term ,local inmates  not all these criminal horrors from all around the United States.

" just to let you know that Ackal made all deputy's park there units. They were not able to take the units home. When they had a call they were able to use the units when there was no call then every deputy had to park their units. They were forbidden to patrol the streets. This was for the reason when he was trying to get more money from the city. Now every deputy has their units again. "

We were shown how filthy the jail was kept, the extreme over crowding and we were shown how much longer the booking process was because of inadequate training. Now I have since been to the jail with ATF and took a tour of Sheriff Ackals jail and I must say, its not perfect but definetly a step up. "

Well looks like he is following Sid'd footsteps of hiding behind closed doors and sending one of his flunkies to intercept people with problems. "

But Everthing That Ackal Has Done Is Good But I Do Not Like Is When You Go To The Courthouse To See Him ,You Get Someone In The IPSO & Not Louis.
Also The Same In The DA Offvice As Well,Mayor Of New Iberia & The List Go's On & On.
But That's How It Is When Someone Is Runing For Something They Will Say Anything To Get Your Vote. "

I hope all you Ackal supporters enjoyed your year of patrol cars cause its about to come to an end. Parked cars and empty uniforms are about to be reality. I can't wait to see what ya'll excuses will be now. I guess more taxes are coming huh? Get ready City of NI, open your wallets. Either for Ackal or Hilda. One of them will be getting your bread money shortly. "

I was born and raised here and moved away for about 8 years after graduating from LSU. I moved back about 2 years ago and noticed that New Iberia is not the same town I grew up in. I now own a my first firearm because I don't feel safe here. The people that make decisions in this town need to address the important issues instead of worrying about where a landfill is located and other stupid issues. "

" The jail was inspected several times a year by the board of health and the fire marshall office. Since this is a public bulding, do your homework and research what these inspections found when they were done. You are quick to say that the jail was in deplorable condition based on a media blitz created by Ackal himself. Let's have another media blitz tomorrow I bet the results WON'T be much different! By the way, drugs are more rampent than EVER too. "

" Trina, if I remember correctly, Ackal was so incensed over the condition of the jail he inherited, he invited the local media. Now everyone can see why it was in that condition. "

" Because your Sheriff Hebert left the jail in such deplorable condition..Do you remember seeing it on TV? Hebert never passed a jail inspection because, for some reason I do not understand, never was inspected.. Under our previous sheriff, dope was being distributed to prisioners, rapes being committed, and
tell me, after what you saw on TV, would you have eaten there? Give me a break (not jailbreak) "

"

" I agree with you there, but Ackal has only been in office since January. That makes 6 months! What will it look like in one year!!!!! I guess he'll still be saying it's all Sid's fault again and again and again......

By the way, why are there a large number of patrol cars parked at the patrol center? Don't we have personnel that should be patrolling the city and parish? "

" You say that the parish jail can go back to housing 260 prisoners! The back log of cases is greater than 260 so what do you propose we do with the left overs? It will cost way more to house the extra inmates in another parish. You are obviously blind to what really goes on at the parish jail and what type of inmates are housed there. I am a tax payer and I don't wnat to FOOT that bill! maybe we need a new ceo? "

" I wonder how Ackal can say he's out of "tending the Parish Jail?" It is clearly defined in the criminal code book that the "Sheriff" is the "Keeper of the jail"! Now explain to me how Ackal thinks he can just not show up for his mandated responsibility? Furhter, is the D.A. ready to enforce the law as written? "

" You are obviously confused about what type of inmate is really housed in the Iberia Parish Jail. It is FULL of local inmates. I don't know how you figure that it is filled with federal and DOC inmates. It is being used for the purpose for which it is intended. The difference is the MANAGEMENT or shall I say, "LACK OF MANAGEMENT". "

" The post title and the following words lead me to believe you have no idea as to what you are talking about. If he 'bailed' out of a jail contract then it was the maintenance contract. Why get all worked up about what the Parish Council is going to do, getting a private company won't fix the maintenance problems, the parish will still be responsible. Do you really think people from New Iberia don't commit bank robbery, rape and murder? If Ackal gives up the jail, he'll be laying off a lot more than 15 people. "
