The Daytona 500 is the beginning of the NASCAR racing season.

On Saturday, some possible future drivers or designers of the automobiles of tomorrow proved their skills during the annual Attakapas District Derby Day at the Cyr-Gates Community Center.

The event featured nearly 100 Cub Scouts in the Attakapas District, which encompasses all of Iberia Parish ,with their Pinewood Derby racers.

Andy Arceneaux, spokesman for the event, the Pinewood Derby is an event in which the Cub Scout fashions a racing car from a block of wood.

With just a little help and guidance from parents and pack leaders, the Cub Scouts create a racing machine powered by gravity to certain specifications, such as a weight of not more than 5 ounces.

The scout can decorate or paint the car to suit their own personal tastes.

For Derby Day, the scouts from different packs gathered at the Cyr-Gates Community Center and raced one-on-one with each other.

Arceneaux estimated that the Pinewood Derby has been held for more than 20 years.

Within the last five years, the Rain Gutter Regatta was added. In this event, the scout create a sailboat from a kit and use lung power to blow the water craft down the water-filed gutters.
